The Difference Between Laser Engraving and Laser Marking

We get this question all the time from our clients. We share insight in this video below!

Laser Engraving (or Laser Etching) is a Subtractive Manufacturing method, that uses a laser beam to remove material on the surface of an object. The impression left behind is apparent and measurable.

Laser Marking is where the beam is interacting with the surface of the material and slightly altering its properties or appearance. Typically referred to as annealing, no appreciable depth is present.

The term “Laser” is an acronym, Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. If you think about the word amplification, you begin to understand what a laser is doing. A beam of light is being amplified in some manner to produce a very small and intense focal point. There are different methods to amplify the light and a wide range of wavelengths available which gets into the types of lasers that exist in the market today. Each one has its own unique properties that interact with materials in a very specific way.
